HVAC technician salary in Florida
Florida is one of the busiest HVAC markets in the country, because systems run most of the year. The most recent state-level figures we could confirm from BLS are from May 2023: about 37,370 workers in Florida earned an annual mean wage of $52,220. In the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach area, the annual mean wage was $55,640.
Those are averages across all experience levels. As a result, new apprentices usually start lower, while senior service technicians often earn well above them.
Training and certification you need
- Training: many techs start with a trade school program or an apprenticeship.
- EPA certification: anyone who handles refrigerant must be certified under the EPA Section 608 refrigerant rules.
- Field experience: most of the real learning happens on the job, next to a senior tech.
- State license: in Florida, the company doing HVAC work must hold a contractor license. You can look up licenses on the Florida DBPR license lookup.
How HVAC technicians raise their salary
Pay usually rises with skill and responsibility. For example, strong diagnostic skills, commercial experience and the ability to explain options to customers all add value. Later on, some techs move into crew leadership, sales or running their own company.
